The Tech Evangelist Who Lives Life According to the Tides

Adventurer: Guy Kawasaki
Escapades: Hockey with his sons, surfing the shores of Santa Cruz, India and Australia

The tides rule Guy Kawasaki’s life. “I almost called you up today to postpone this interview to go surf,” he laughed during a recent call from his home in Santa Cruz, Calif. “All my meetings, interviews, podcast recordings— everything is scheduled around the tide.”

Long before Kawasaki, now 69, picked up surfing at the ripe age of 60, he made a name for himself as a tech marketing guru. He joined Apple in 1983, where he convinced third party developers to create Macintosh line products. Nowadays, he’s the “chief evangelist” for graphic design startup Canva as well as an author and a podcast host.

His mind is usually half on work, and half on the Pacific Ocean, where he rarely misses an opportunity to surf the low tide. Here, Kawasaki walks us through picking up hockey at 44, surfing at 60, and where he acquired his 20-plus surfboard collection.
