I’m Ann, and I cover e-commerce and retail for The Information. Lately, I’ve been hearing more about Flip, a TikTok-like shopping app that’s been dominating my conversations with e-commerce founders, as well as my X feed, for the past few weeks—thanks to a costly way of getting new customers.
The app, first launched in 2019, offers a scrollable feed of videos from creators and other users recommending and reviewing products they’ve purchased. Flip takes a cut of all sales made on the platform and says it doesn’t charge brands fees to join or for the creation of review videos. Over the past month, it’s risen 50 spots to become a top 10 shopping app on Apple’s App Store alongside heavyweights like Temu, Shein and Amazon, according to mobile data platform Data.ai.
