The Information’s Return to the Office Tracker: Spring 2022

After many fits and starts over the past two years, a critical mass of tech workers is finally returning to the office. Some companies, like Google and Uber, are requiring workers in their seats at least two days a week. Others like Salesforce are leaving commutes mostly up to employees and managers. Still others, such as Coinbase and Robinhood, are sticking with a remote-first approach.

The activity on two big Silicon Valley campuses Tuesday illustrated that office life has come back—to some degree. At Meta Platforms’ newer buildings at 1 Facebook Way in Menlo Park, Calif., cars were parked to the third floor of nearby garages and employees cycled between buildings on Facebook-blue bikes. The parking lots at Meta’s older buildings at 1 Hacker Way were only partially full, however. The parent of Facebook had set March 28 for a return to the office but allowed employees to defer their return to late June.

A little over six miles away, the scene around Google’s Mountain View, Calif., headquarters was noticeably busier after Google began requiring most employees in the U.S. to return to offices at least three days per week starting Monday, April 4. By mid-morning, the lots around the low-slung headquarters were packed with cars, employees were riding the company’s yellow and green bikes between buildings, and large commuter shuttle buses turned in and out of Google’s lots.
