Snap Tests Ads on Spotlight; Q&A With TikToker Kallmekris

Snap’s warning that global economic problems are tripping up its business largely overshadowed the rest of its first-quarter results, including a healthy jump in users. But the accompanying call with investors did include an update on its creator products that’s worth noting, especially since they could make its Snapchat app a more fierce rival to TikTok

CEO Evan Spiegel said Snap is testing ads on Spotlight, its TikTok copycat feature. This test follows Snap’s launch of mid-roll ads in Stories, its flagship Snapchat feature. Snap has seen creators posting videos to Spotlight to attract more users to watch their ad-supported Stories. 

“We’ll continue to be investing there and of course testing advertising on Spotlight because we think it’s going to be a great place for advertisers,” Spiegel said, noting that Spotlight’s full-screen vertical video format is one that advertisers have already adopted widely.
