Meta’s Glasses Roadmap; Pico’s Consumer VR Beta; Niantic Introduces Peridot

Meta Platforms is aiming to get its first AR glasses out to consumers in 2024, The Verge reported today. That’s an ambitious target date, given some of the new details about the glasses in the Verge report. And it suggests Meta is pushing against the limits of what many in the industry think is possible or advisable.

According to the Verge report, Meta may have two different device launches in 2024: Nazare, the standalone AR glasses Meta has already discussed publicly, and Hypernova, simpler glasses reliant on phone pairing and featuring a smaller display for notifications. The AR hardware teams at Reality Labs are reportedly planning to follow those with improved glasses in 2026 and 2028, though all of this is up in the air and subject to delays (meanwhile Project Cambria, Meta’s mixed reality headset, is still targeted for launch this year).
