Tilt Five, the AR startup focused on making glasses suited for digital board gaming, is finally shipping glasses to its early crowdfunding backers and today announced a lineup of 16 titles that will be available at the system’s commercial launch next quarter. For CEO and co-founder Jeri Ellsworth, both are major milestones along a winding path that has traced the ups and downs of consumer VR and AR tech for years.
A decade ago, Ellsworth was at Valve Software working on technologies that ended up shaping the wave of consumer VR hardware that followed. Ellsworth was fired in 2013, but made a deal to acquire the rights to an AR solution she invented that later formed the basis of Tilt Five. But the first startup she co-founded to commercialize the idea folded, an experience that Ellsworth recently told Reality Check stemmed in part from losing focus on a simple goal: making an AR system that worked great for one particular setting.
