The Big Idea Behind Unity’s Weta Purchase; Life at Google’s Owlchemy

Unity is framing its $1.625 billion purchase of visual effects house Weta Digital as a metaverse play, and there’s enough of a vision there to justify the use of tech’s current favorite buzzword. To better understand why the deal matters, though—and why Epic might wish it had been the one signing papers with Peter Jackson—it’s better to focus on what making 3D content entails, regardless of whether the content is destined for a movie screen, phone or an AR/VR headset.

Weta’s tools and talent will complement Unity’s existing software, providing a broader package that it can offer to businesses and hobbyists both in and outside of the film industry. Highly detailed physics and visual simulations are useful not only to the movie business, but across all the various industries investing in 3D content. This tech can start creating value for Unity long before the metaverse fulfils its reality as the next, immersive evolution of the internet.
