The beneficence of Apple knows no bounds. The tech giant is making it easier for ordinary people to repair their iPhones. Under a new program, it will send the parts and tools necessary for iPhone repairs to anyone who asks. Just imagine—this could provide a new source of growth for iPhone sales, as thousands of people attempting DIY repairs break their phones so badly they have to buy new ones. (Kidding!)
Given the symbiotic relationship between the news media and Apple (coverage drives traffic to media websites and sales to Apple), it’s no surprise that Apple’s Self Service Repair program got serious news treatment. But it’s hard to see this as anything other than theater. Apple is responding to pressure from the newly activist Federal Trade Commission, which wants everyone to have the “right to repair” their own products.
