If Mark Zuckerberg really wants to turn Facebook into a metaverse company, he needs to learn a lesson from Monday’s outage of Facebook services. Most obviously, Facebook should rethink its current approach of using Facebook accounts as a point-of-entry to all sorts of products—both internal and external.
That arrangement is fundamentally at odds with the promise of the metaverse, a more immersive experience than the existing internet and one that relies more obviously on platforms being interoperable. Moreover, the metaverse is expected to be an even greater driver of commerce and business than the internet. If we expect even more people to be reliant on the metaverse for their livelihoods, these kinds of failures could have more disastrous consequences.
