Amazon’s Spray-and-Pray Hardware Strategy

Yes, Amazon wants to be bigger in the consumer gadget business. The ecommerce-and-cloud- behemoth introduced so many new devices today that it's tough to fit a mention of all of them into one sentence. Everything from a robot that roams around the home to a new Fitbit-like health tracker to a video doorbell and a new video-calling device. One thing is for sure: no one can say anything Amazon did was boring, as some critics called Apple’s recent iPhone 13 announcement.

Still, as “boring” as Apple’s product announcements might be, at least the iPhone maker picks its shots and focuses on well-made devices that will last a while. Amazon, in contrast, appears to simply throw mud (or in this case electronics) against a wall to see what sticks. The answer is, not much, as is clear from the aftermath of past product announcements. Remember Amazon’s Alexa-powered microwave, introduced in 2018? Neither does anyone else. It doesn’t help that some products—like the flying indoor drone Amazon announced last year—don’t go on sale immediately. Amazon said today the drone will shortly be available.
