More Social Networks Are Charging for Ad-Free Apps

Just a few years ago, an ad-free social media network would have seemed like an oxymoron. But more have started testing subscriptions to ad-free versions of their apps, which could generate revenue beyond digital advertising—and in some cases, placate regulators. Last week, TikTok confirmed it was testing an ad-free subscription to its app. The tests follow Meta Platforms, which has proposed subscriptions to ad-free versions of Facebook and Instagram in Europe. In Meta’s case, the ad-free offering responds to rising privacy regulations that give European users more control over the data they share with advertisers
