Apple holds its first product event of the year tomorrow, March 8. An updated version of the iPhone SE, currently the company’s entry-level $399 smartphone, is expected to headline the event—this time with 5G support. That’s a big deal. By bringing it to their lower-end device, Apple will help broaden adoption of 5G across the population.
That could mark a turning point for 5G, especially as it relates to mobile AR use. The latest wireless generation hasn’t exactly taken off just yet; there’s been no point in seeking out a 5G-capable phone for connection speeds if you’re not living near fast, reliable access. And because 5G access is so limited, even early adopters are probably wondering what the hubbub is all about. AR is potentially one of the killer use cases for 5G’s ultrafast speeds and yet none of the best AR apps today are made to rely on the tech.
