The PlayStation Chip Squeeze; Meta’s Earnings Anticipation

The chip shortage is taking a bite out of Sony’s PlayStation 5 business. Sony Corp today lowered its forecast for the console’s sales in the fiscal year that ends next month by 22%, to 11.5 million, guaranteeing the current generation console will badly trail its predecessor in total sales until supply constraints ease up. And that could become a problem for future sales of Sony’s PlayStation VR2 headset.

The lowered forecast isn’t too much of a shock. While the PlayStation 5, released in 2020, kept pace with early sales of its predecessor through much of last year, that changed in the holiday season. Shipments of the PlayStation 5 in the last quarter fell over 2 million short of the PlayStation 4’s shipments during its second holiday in 2014, despite intense demand.
