Tech companies are the most powerful companies in the world. They are run by some of the most powerful people in the world. And most of what they do remains hidden in the shadows, obscured by complex processes and maneuvers.
Here at The Information, we know technology. No organization has more expertise covering its power. We also know that following that world will lead us to the most important stories in business over the coming decades.
And so, when our team reflected on the biggest areas of opportunity for coverage in 2022, we had no shortage of areas where we wanted to significantly expand—many of them areas where tech’s tentacles are disrupting fast and the public understanding doesn’t meet the reality of what’s happening.
We already have one of the largest newsrooms in the world covering technology, a squad of award-winning reporters from the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg and Financial Times—as well as a cohort of extremely talented, young journalists just getting started.
As our business growth accelerates, we’re aiming to increase the size of our editorial team by around a third this year, bringing us to some 50 reporters and editors globally.
Here are a few areas where we aim to hire multiple talented reporters immediately, from enterprising journalists getting their start to experienced journalists looking for a new challenge. We are also looking for editors to help lead this coverage and reporters who can’t quite quit reporting just yet and want to be players/coaches.
- Capital Markets/Finance: For eight years, The Information has dominated reporting on startup funding, breaking deal after deal and bringing readers behind the scenes with the definitive stories about the key companies and investors. We have been the first to profile the biggest names in tech investing and fintech, often months before competitors are paying attention. We’re expanding our team with more reporters focused on different stages of capital, including private equity and the public markets. Team size: 5+.
- Crypto: We aim to be the most dominant authority on deals and investments in the field, the go-to source on the inner workings of the most important companies and the place to go to understand all the projects that are nipping at their heels. Team size: 4.
- Enterprise software: Every business across the globe is buying up cloud software and the trend is going to dramatically accelerate with the rise of artificial intelligence. But the cloud industry, which generates hundreds of billions of dollars of revenue annually is opaque: The true costs of buying this software at scale can be hidden, and major technical and product failures by cloud computing providers are often swept under the rug. The Information has a long track record of revealing the good, the bad, and the ugly inside major cloud providers and customers. We’re expanding this team to put more firepower behind this gigantic reporting opportunity as well as tackle the always-hot cloud security industry as it tries to keep up with new threats. Team size: 4+.
We are also looking for more reporters to cover the largest technology companies, including Apple, and Microsoft. We’re looking for reporters motivated to cover the intersection of tech and culture for our new Weekend section. And we’re looking for amazing editors (and those who aspire to become them) who want to lead a team.
How We Are Different
We are looking for reporters motivated by the enormity of the coverage task at hand. We are a team who want to stretch ourselves to do the stories we think about at night but never quite get to during the day. We don’t believe you need years of experience on a beat to be the best reporter on that beat—and we know we can help any talented reporter get there fast.
And we believe in rewarding the best with compensation that matches the high quality of their work.
No one on our team does it alone. We know what support good journalists need to be great. The Information reporters are guided by editorial leaders who have been trained by legendary news editors, honing their skills and experience in the most renowned newsrooms of the last few decades. But they also have the benefit of a newsroom culture built for the challenges of reporting today from the ground up. Our newsroom is on the cutting edge of using technology to help our reporters do their jobs and reach readers in new ways.
We are a nimble team and pride ourselves on creating opportunities for our journalists, whether they want to create events, podcasts, databases, documentaries or more. We are committed to offering our employees the flexibility they need to do their best work and to building a diverse culture that is essential to strengthening our team and our journalism.
As we document these historic shifts in business, we are aware of the historic shifts the news industry is going through too. Without viable business models, many outlets are shrinking. Brands are vanishing. Others are being consolidated, rapidly, under corporate owners with hidden agendas. Many are losing their independence and neutrality.
We feel fortunate that we’re different. Our successful subscription business, buttressed by multiple new revenue streams, has put us in a tremendously exciting and aggressive place.
If the values outlined here resonate with you, we’d love to hear from you. Please email jobs@theinformation.com to set something up.
