We learned on Wednesday just how much HTC wants to be seen as a fully fledged, all-around metaverse player, not just a company known for capable VR products. The maker of Vive VR products released a new concept video of the “Viverse,” a day-in-the-life depiction of a theoretical metaverse. The video mixes real Vive VR products with a heavy dose of speculative AR software and hardware, all of which then revolves around an economy built atop cryptocurrencies and NFTs.
HTC should watch its step. Early reactions to the Viverse video online are trending harshly negative, with many expressing disappointment that HTC is pursuing the metaverse at all. We’ve known for a while that much of Vive’s value to consumers rests in the fact that it’s not Meta Platforms. By chasing after some of the same metaverse ideas as Meta, Vive risks losing its distinctiveness.
